Provided by AGPThe bloc had pushed for an emergency debate under the title "Israel's airstrikes in Lebanon, the urgent need to uphold the ceasefire & EU's responsibility to prevent further escalation." The motion was struck down by a margin of 259 votes to 181, preventing the session from proceeding.
The Left Group condemned the outcome in a post on X, the U.S. social media platform, squarely laying the blame on the broader parliamentary majority.
"Once again, the European Parliament chooses complicity with Netanyahu's regime by rejecting it," the group wrote.
Alongside the rebuke, the Left Group renewed its longstanding demand for the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, citing the bloc's obligations under international law.
The vote comes amid a mounting civilian catastrophe in Lebanon. Since March 2, Israeli military strikes have killed nearly 3,000 people, wounded more than 9,000, and uprooted over 1.6 million — roughly one-fifth of the country's total population — according to Lebanese officials. While a U.S.-brokered ceasefire has officially paused the latest offensive, Israel has continued to breach the truce on a daily basis, officials say.
