Iran Reports Two US Ships Trapped in Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) Two US-flagged commercial vessels are trapped in treacherous shallow waters in the southern reaches of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's semi-official news agency reported Tuesday — a development that has drawn no immediate response from Washington.
According to Fars, US Central Command had asserted that both vessels successfully transited the strait on Monday, a claim flatly rejected by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
"Now, an informed source says that waters near the coast of Oman are rocky, and the vessels are unable to either exit or return from that area," reported.
The agency further cautioned that the strait's southern corridor is geographically ill-suited for maritime passage, noting it "does not have capacity" to serve as a viable shipping route, and that "navigation through these shallow, rocky southern waters is highly risky."
Washington has yet to issue any statement addressing the report.
The incident unfolds against a volatile regional backdrop. Tensions ignited after US and Israeli forces launched coordinated strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, prompting Tehran to retaliate against Israel and US allies across the Gulf — and to shut down the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical oil transit chokepoints.
A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation took hold on April 8, though subsequent negotiations in Islamabad collapsed without yielding a durable settlement. US President Donald Trump later extended the truce unilaterally, setting no fixed expiration date.
