Nearly 4,000 Yemenis Face Deportation as U.S. Terminates TPS for Yemen
US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced the policy reversal Friday, ending protections that have shielded Yemenis from deportation since 2015.
"After reviewing country conditions and consulting with the appropriate U.S. government agencies, I determined that Yemen no longer meets the statutory requirements for its TPS designation," she said.
Mustafa Ahmad Noman, Yemen's deputy minister of foreign affairs and expatriates, characterized the move as predictable given current White House immigration enforcement priorities.
"The decision was not surprising in light of the U.S. administration's policy of deporting immigrants living in the United States, whether legal or illegal," Mustafa Ahmad Noman, Yemen's deputy minister of foreign affairs and expatriates, told media.
Affected individuals "can pursue legal avenues, as other Arab and non-Arab communities have done and succeeded in delaying it," he said, noting the Yemeni embassy in Washington maintains ongoing efforts to assist those impacted.
The United States originally granted Yemen TPS designation in September 2015 amid escalating armed conflict, determining deportations would endanger returnees' safety.
"Allowing TPS beneficiaries from Yemen to remain temporarily in the United States is contrary to our national interest," Noem said, emphasizing the program's intended temporary nature.
Yemeni nationals lacking alternative legal status now have 60 days to voluntarily exit before facing detention and forced removal once the termination becomes effective, Noem warned.
