Senate Approves Funding Plan to Prevent Government Closure
Senators cast a 71 29 vote in favor of the proposal, which contains five multi year appropriations bills and temporarily sustains financing for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for an additional two weeks to provide more time for talks on immigration enforcement funding.
The approved measure now moves to the House of Representatives. However, federal appropriations are still slated to lapse at midnight because the House has not yet taken action on the legislation and is not anticipated to return to session until Monday.
In the wake of a fatal shooting in Minnesota earlier this month — when federal agents killed American citizen Alex Pretti — Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said he and his fellow Democrats would refuse to support the plan unless the part of the appropriations bill that contained DHS funding was stripped out.
If the House enacts the bill early next week, any government disruption is expected to be limited. There appears to be little appetite in Washington for a repeat of the extended shutdown that lasted 43 days late last year.
After the Senate vote, Schumer told reporters that, for Democrats to back long term DHS financing, there must be “strong, common sense legislation that reins in ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement).”
