U.S. Senator Proposes Bill to Abolish Dual Citizenship Nationwide
The proposed law would grant dual citizens a one-year window to submit written renunciation of either their foreign or American citizenship. Those failing to comply would be deemed to have voluntarily surrendered their U.S. nationality.
"If you want to be an American – it's all or nothing. It's time to end dual citizenship for good," stated Moreno, the Colombia-born lawmaker who received U.S. citizenship at age 18, in a press release announcing the measure.
Media reports indicate the legislation, if passed, would directly impact Slovenia-born First Lady Melania Trump and her son, Barron.
Melania relocated to America in 1996 and completed formal naturalization procedures. Though no official confirmation exists regarding retained Slovenian citizenship, numerous biographical sources claim she maintained it and secured the same status for Barron.
Additional high-profile figures reportedly holding dual citizenship include Tesla and SpaceX chief Elon Musk, former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and actors Tom Hanks and Salma Hayek.
Legal experts warn Moreno's proposal faces potential constitutional obstacles, as it contradicts the 14th Amendment guaranteeing citizens cannot be stripped of citizenship without voluntary relinquishment. While federal authorities maintain no official dual citizenship registry, approximately 40 million Americans—roughly 12% of the population—could legally possess it, according to International Living, a global expatriate publication.
The measure aligns with President Donald Trump's immigration agenda. Since resuming office, he has issued multiple executive orders reinforcing border enforcement, implementing stricter asylum eligibility standards, detaining thousands of undocumented migrants, and attempting to terminate automatic birthright citizenship for U.S.-born children. Federal courts immediately blocked the birthright citizenship order, ruling it unconstitutional.
