Taiwanese Voters Reject Opposition Lawmaker Recalls
(MENAFN) On Saturday, the people of Taiwan dismissed recall proposals targeting seven opposition legislators.
Although a referendum to reactivate the island's final nuclear power plant attracted more approvals than rejections, it ultimately did not meet the legal benchmark to be enacted.
The seven lawmakers from the Kuomintang (KMT) successfully resisted efforts to remove them from office prematurely.
This result closely resembled a similar occurrence in July, when the electorate likewise voted against attempts to dismiss 24 KMT representatives and one Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) mayor.
Taiwan’s political landscape remains heavily influenced by opposition parties, who hold a majority in the legislature. This composition places the governing policies of President William Lai Ching-te at the mercy of opposition votes in order to pass legislation.
Voters also participated in a referendum concerning the potential restart of the Maanshan nuclear facility, located in Pingtung County in the southern region of Taiwan.
The proposal, brought forward by the TPP, received more than 4.3 million votes in favor.
However, it failed to surpass the mandatory threshold of 5 million votes required for the measure to be validated.
Voter participation was notably low, dipping below 30% — the weakest turnout since the revision of Taiwan’s Referendum Act in 2017.
Both the KMT and TPP interpreted the outcomes of the referendum and recall votes as indicators of increasing public favor toward nuclear energy and growing dissatisfaction with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
