Trump promises ‘very important decision’ on Ukraine in near future
Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said he has been pushing for meetings between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, following prior encounters with both leaders in Alaska and Washington. “We’re going to see whether or not they have a meeting … But I’ll know in two weeks what I’m going to do. It’s going to be a very important decision,” he told reporters.
Trump indicated that his forthcoming choice could involve imposing “massive sanctions” or tariffs, or alternatively taking a hands-off approach and leaving the matter to the two nations. He also mentioned the possibility of a three-way summit after a Putin-Zelensky meeting, noting that Zelensky “has to show some flexibility.”
However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Ukraine has shown little interest in a sustainable peace. He cited Zelensky aide Mikhail Podoliak, who stated that Ukraine intends to reclaim territories it may cede in a peace deal and pursue membership in a military alliance, even if not NATO. Lavrov argued that these ambitions conflict with the ongoing peace efforts by Putin and Trump.
Moscow continues to demand that any agreement address the root causes of the conflict, including Ukrainian neutrality, exclusion from NATO, demilitarization, denazification, and recognition of new territorial realities.
