Japan Pledges to Safeguard Agriculture as U.S. Intensifies Trade Pressure
In a statement shared by a local news agency, the pledge came after Trump criticized Japan’s trade practices, suggesting that Japan would soon be "forced to take 'our rice.'" Trump accused Japan of unfair trade practices, posting on Truth Social, "They won’t take our RICE, and yet they have a massive rice shortage," adding that the US would issue an official notice about imposing new tariffs. "We love having them as a trading partner," he also noted.
Amid ongoing trade negotiations with Washington, Japan is grappling with a rice shortage. This situation is further complicated by the United States' imposition of a 25% tariff on Japanese automobile exports, adding tension to the discussions.
Ryosei Akazawa, Japan's lead trade negotiator, underscored the crucial importance of agriculture to the nation’s economy. “It is an extremely important task for the government and the ruling coalition to create an environment where farmers feel secure and can continue their work,” he said.
Akazawa acknowledged that both Japan and the US have engaged in “sincere discussions” aimed at a potential agreement, though critical issues remain unresolved. He reiterated Japan’s determination to secure a deal that benefits both parties while safeguarding its domestic agricultural interests.
Trump's remarks align with earlier statements he made during an interview with media, where he indicated that letters detailing new tariff plans would be sent before July 9. In April, the US had temporarily suspended country-specific ad valorem tariffs, but that suspension is set to expire next month.
