Biggest attack by Russia on Ukraine
This overnight attack into Tuesday was among the most severe on Kyiv since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion. President Volodymyr Zelensky described it as "one of the most terrifying strikes."
The Russian defense ministry stated that the targets were Ukraine’s military-industrial facilities and claimed all objectives were successfully hit.
The bombardment continued for more than nine hours, forcing residents to seek refuge in underground shelters from just before midnight until after dawn.
Authorities confirmed that a ballistic missile struck a nine-story residential building in Kyiv, with 27 city districts affected by shelling. The collapse of the building’s entrance in the southwestern Solomyanskyi district raised fears that casualty numbers might increase.
Among the dead was a 62-year-old US citizen, according to Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko.
