WHO Chief Warns of Dire Consequences from Israel-Iran Conflict

(MENAFN) The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) voiced grave concerns on Tuesday about the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran, highlighting the catastrophic consequences for civilians and the alarming health dangers linked to attacks near nuclear sites.

“The escalation of violence between Israel and Iran is extremely concerning -- and is costing the lives of civilians, including children,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated in a message on X.
He also stressed, “The growing number of injured civilians are also distressing.”

Tedros emphasized WHO’s heightened worry over reports of assaults close to nuclear facilities, cautioning, “Targeting of nuclear sites … may have immediate and long-term impacts on the environment and health of people in Iran and across the region.”

As the crisis intensifies, the WHO chief urged all involved parties to pursue peaceful solutions. “We call on all parties to work towards peace. The most courageous choose peace,” he declared.

The surge in hostilities began last Friday when Israel conducted airstrikes targeting multiple locations in Iran, including military and nuclear infrastructures. In retaliation, Tehran launched missile strikes against Israeli targets.

According to Israeli officials, Iranian missile attacks have resulted in at least 24 fatalities and hundreds of injuries. Conversely, Iran reports that Israeli strikes have killed at least 224 individuals and wounded over 1,000 others.
