Russia’s Security Chief Visits North Korea
This marks Shoygu’s second journey to the North Korean capital within just under two weeks, the earlier one occurring on June 4.
The timing aligns with the one-year commemoration of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreement sealed by both countries the previous year.
According to a news agency, this latest visit is being conducted “at the instructions” of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Shoygu, who oversees Russia’s Security Council, has frequently visited North Korea in recent times, indicating a deepening of diplomatic and defense ties.
After the formalization of the partnership agreement between President Putin and Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang, North Korea sent thousands of military personnel to assist Russia in its war with Ukraine.
The bilateral pact mandates that both nations offer military backing should either face an assault from a third country.
