Islam's Expansion Outpaces Christianity in 2010s
This acceleration was mainly fueled by higher fertility rates among Muslims and fewer cases of followers abandoning the faith.
Over that decade, the Muslim population worldwide surged by close to 21 percent, while the Christian population saw a more modest increase of around 6 percent.
The report highlighted that Islam's growth rate was twice that of the global population overall, which rose by 10 percent during the same timeframe.
Additionally, the faith attracted more new adherents than all other non-Muslim religions combined throughout the period.
Key contributors to this demographic rise were identified as elevated birth rates and a younger median age among Muslims.
The data from 2015 to 2020 estimated that Muslim women averaged 2.9 children, compared to 2.2 children per non-Muslim woman, providing a major edge in population growth.
Conversion trends played a minimal role in these developments.
The number of individuals who either joined or left Islam was balanced and relatively small, averaging about 1 percent for each over the decade, the analysis noted.
Although Islam experienced faster growth, Christianity remained the world’s most populous religion, with 2.3 billion followers as of 2020. Islam followed closely behind with 2 billion adherents.
However, despite the numerical increase, Christianity’s share of the global population dropped by nearly 2 percent, suggesting a relative decline in its global prominence.
