Netanyahu Hints at Assassination of Khamenei
(MENAFN) Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu has not dismissed the possibility of attempting to eliminate Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as hostilities between Tehran and Tel Aviv continue to intensify.
The two adversaries have been trading blows following a major Israeli strike last Friday, which targeted Iranian nuclear and defense installations.
Israel characterized the offensive as a preemptive measure to prevent Iran from gaining access to nuclear armaments.
The attacks reportedly extended to non-military targets, including residential zones and the national broadcasting agency, leading to casualties.
The United States, despite being involved in Oman-facilitated diplomatic discussions with Iran regarding its nuclear program, has expressed support for Israel’s military campaign.
In an interview conducted by a news agency on Monday, Netanyahu responded to questions about reports suggesting that US Leader Donald Trump had previously turned down an Israeli suggestion to eliminate Khamenei due to concerns that it might worsen the confrontation.
Netanyahu countered, saying, “It’s not going to escalate the conflict, it’s going to end the conflict.”
He argued that “The ‘forever war’ is what Iran wants, and they’re bringing us to the brink of nuclear war. In fact, what Israel is doing is preventing this, bringing an end to this aggression.”
When pressed on whether he truly intends to pursue Khamenei as a target, Netanyahu responded, “Look, we’re doing what we need to do. I’m not going to get into the details, but we’ve targeted their top nuclear scientists.”
The remarks highlight a sharp deterioration in Israeli-Iranian relations, with potential implications for regional stability and ongoing nuclear diplomacy.
