Russian, Ukrainian director negotiators conduct confidential private meeting
The second round of direct talks between Moscow and Kiev wrapped up after more than an hour. Before the official session, Medinsky and Umerov met privately in an unannounced discussion that helped set the stage for the broader negotiations.
“There was a meeting, and it was important in preparing the general session,” Medinsky told reporters but did not provide additional details. An anonymous source told RT that the private meeting lasted about two and a half hours.
During the Istanbul talks, both sides exchanged detailed memorandums presenting their proposals for resolving the conflict. Medinsky said Kiev’s delegation took Russia’s draft for review and plans to respond formally later.
The negotiators also agreed on their largest prisoner swap to date, involving all seriously ill and wounded prisoners of war, plus all prisoners under 25 years old, with at least 1,000 individuals exchanged from each side, possibly more.
Additionally, Russia will unilaterally return the remains of 6,000 Ukrainian soldiers to Kiev next week to ensure proper Christian burials. Moscow has also suggested a temporary multi-day ceasefire in several frontline areas to allow the recovery of fallen soldiers and to prevent health risks as warmer weather approaches.
