Trump states “Iran should have signed the ‘deal’”
(MENAFN) The United States is exploring the possibility of direct talks with Iran this week to discuss a nuclear agreement and a potential ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, according to a report by Axios on Monday.
Four sources familiar with the matter told the outlet that discussions are underway to arrange a meeting between US envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The talks would reportedly aim to revive nuclear negotiations and deescalate the conflict that has intensified since Friday.
US President Donald Trump is cutting short his attendance at the G7 Summit in Canada due to the rapidly deteriorating situation in the Middle East. “I have to be back early for obvious reasons,” he told reporters.
On his Truth Social account, Trump emphasized his warning to Iran over its nuclear ambitions, writing: “Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again!” He also urged an “immediate evacuation” of Tehran.
The call for diplomacy comes amid rising hostilities. Since Friday, Israel has carried out a wave of air and drone strikes on Iranian nuclear and military targets, prompting significant retaliatory missile barrages from Tehran.
