Upcoming G7 summit in Canada is expects to challenge unity of group

(MENAFN) The upcoming G7 summit in Canada is expected to challenge the unity of the group, which consists of the world’s leading Western economies plus Japan. Since Donald Trump’s presidency, the US has frequently clashed with its G7 partners on key issues.

The G7’s influence over the global financial system has diminished since the 2008 financial crisis, which led to the formation of the G20. This broader group was created because the traditional Western powers, including Japan, recognized they could no longer manage the global economy alone. Their aim was to maintain G7 dominance by integrating emerging economies into the existing globalized system they helped establish.

However, the escalating geopolitical tensions with Russia—expelled from the G8 in 2014 after its military actions in Ukraine—and the designation of China as the main long-term US adversary, have made this strategy unrealistic. Efforts to preserve Western hegemony by selectively co-opting non-Western countries no longer hold.

Meanwhile, Russia and China have strengthened their strategic partnership, increasing bilateral trade and conducting business in their own currencies. The BRICS alliance has grown, with members pushing for more economic independence through development banks, greater use of their own currencies, reforms of global political and financial institutions, and support for a multipolar world order to enhance their influence in global governance.

Trump’s transactional style, prioritizing trade over geopolitics, has severely disrupted G7 unity. He has imposed tariffs on all countries, including G7 allies, and has undermined the global trade system by violating World Trade Organization rules. His policies reverse globalization, viewing the EU—which participates in G7 summits—as a counter to American interests.

His stance on European security has unsettled transatlantic relations, and his approach to Russia and the Ukraine conflict has alarmed European leaders. His administration’s comments on Europe’s internal affairs and his anti-woke agenda challenging European liberal values have further strained ties. These tensions have sparked discussions among European leaders about a possible rift between the US and Europe.
