Cambodia Imposes Ban on Thai Fruits, Vegetables Imports

(MENAFN) Cambodia has taken a decisive step by officially banning the import of fruits and vegetables from Thailand starting Tuesday, according to a statement from the country’s top immigration authority.

Police Lieutenant General Sok Veasna, director general of the General Department of Immigration, confirmed the measure in a phone interview with a news agency. He stated, "We have prohibited the imports of vegetables and fruits from Thailand at all border crossings, starting from this morning." This ban affects every official entry point along the Cambodia-Thailand border.

The decision follows growing tensions between the two neighboring countries after a recent violent encounter in a disputed border region. During the incident, soldiers from both sides briefly exchanged gunfire, a clash that sadly resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. This escalation has further strained diplomatic relations and sparked concerns about regional stability.

The import restrictions signal Cambodia’s firm stance amid ongoing disputes and underscore the potential economic impact of the conflict on cross-border trade, especially for local farmers and markets reliant on these goods. Authorities have yet to specify how long the ban will remain in place or whether further trade measures might be implemented.
