Police arrests male suspected of murdering US state lawmaker
(MENAFN) Police have arrested Vance Luther Boelter, the main suspect in the murder of Minnesota state lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, following a two-day search. Boelter, 57, is also accused of shooting state senator John Hoffman and his wife in a separate attack. Authorities found him near his home in Sibley County, Minnesota.
Boelter allegedly impersonated a police officer to gain entry into victims’ homes. Early Saturday, he attacked Senator Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, at their residence in Champlin, shooting both multiple times; they survived. He then went to Representative Hortman’s home in Brooklyn Park, where he fatally shot her and her husband, Mark.
Police revealed that Boelter’s vehicle closely resembled a police SUV, complete with emergency lights, allowing him to deceive his targets. A manifesto found in the vehicle listed about 70 names, including lawmakers and community leaders, some known supporters of abortion rights, as well as details about healthcare facilities.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz condemned the shootings as “targeted political violence.” Boelter, who previously served on a state workforce development board alongside Hoffman, held conservative and anti-abortion views. Prior to the attacks, Boelter sent texts to friends apologizing and hinting he might soon die.
Boelter now faces multiple charges, including two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.
