More than 290 murdered due to UK-bound Air India plane colliding into residential building
The aircraft went down in a residential neighborhood minutes after departing from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport in Gujarat. Videos shared on social media show thick black smoke rising from the crash site. Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the accident.
Rescue teams are still working, with one survivor identified—a passenger seated in 11A, who is currently receiving medical treatment, Police Commissioner GS Malik told reporters. Local sources reported that 40-year-old British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh was rescued after reportedly jumping from the plane before it struck the building.
Air India stated that among the passengers were 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Authorities also released a list of 25 people injured on the ground, including medical students—three of whom lost their lives, while others are hospitalized.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed rescue and relief efforts. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu and Home Minister Amit Shah have traveled to Ahmedabad to oversee the response.
