Russia Security Chief Returns to North Korea for Crucial Meeting
This marks Shoygu’s second visit to the North Korean capital in less than two weeks, following his previous trip on June 4. The timing is significant, as it coincides with the one-year anniversary of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreement signed between Moscow and Pyongyang last year.
According to a news agency, the visit was made “at the instructions” of Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing its high-level importance.
Shoygu, who leads Russia’s Security Council, has made several visits to North Korea in recent months amid growing military cooperation between the two countries.
Since the pact’s inception, North Korea has deployed thousands of troops to assist Russia in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The partnership treaty stipulates mutual military aid if either party faces aggression from a third country, underscoring the deepening defense ties between Moscow and Pyongyang.
