Official states cockpit voice recorder regained from Air India crash
The recovery of the second “black box” comes two days after India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) identified the first recorder on Friday. Officials from India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are currently examining it. Recovery teams are continuing their effort to identify the victims.
As of Sunday, 80 DNA matches have been made, and 33 bodies have been positively identified and handed back to their families, the Additional Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital said. The AAIB and Airports Authority of India (AAI) held a high-level meeting to review ongoing rescue and investigative operations.
A range of potential factors — from technical problems to human error — are being investigated. According to the Associated Press, initial reports suggest the aircraft may not have been configured correctly for takeoff.
The DGCA has directed Air India to carry out maintenance checks on its Boeing 787-8/9 Dreamliner aircraft immediately and to review all takeoff procedures from the last two weeks. A team from Boeing has also arrived on site to aid investigations. Parts of the aircraft's two General Electric GEnx engines will be sent to the USA for further analysis, a Hindustan Times report said.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu stated in a Saturday press briefing that “Of India's 34 Dreamliners, eight have already been inspected.”
