Official states Ukrainian assaults provoke power outages in Russia
(MENAFN) Late on Monday, Ukrainian drone strikes hit power facilities in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, causing extensive blackouts and affecting hundreds of thousands of people, according to Russian officials.
Evgeny Balitsky, Zaporozhye’s governor, said the attack struck high-voltage equipment in the northwest of the region, cutting power to nearly 600,000 homes across 457 settlements. Healthcare facilities were temporarily switched to backup power sources while crews rushed to reconnect the grid through alternative routes.
About an hour later, in Kherson’s Genichesky District, a drone attack disabled a new substation, affecting more than 104,000 people and 44 key facilities across roughly 150 settlements. Regional governor Vladimir Saldo assured that backup power was quickly routed to critical sites.
The attacks came just after a new round of peace talks in Istanbul, where Moscow demanded recognition of the former Ukrainian regions it now controls, the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from those areas, and a neutral, non-nuclear future for Ukraine. Kiev dismissed these conditions, insisting it would not compromise its territory or future.
Zaporozhye, Kherson, and the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics formally joined Russia in 2022 following referendums, while Crimea voted to become part of Russia in 2014.
