Global Labor Forum Addresses New Work Challenges

(MENAFN) The International Labor Organization (ILO) commenced its 113th International Labor Conference (ILC) on Monday in Geneva. Delegations from 187 member nations—comprising representatives of governments, laborers, and employers—are participating in the assembly, which will continue until June 13.

This year's schedule covers several pressing matters. It includes a follow-up discussion on a proposed Convention and Recommendation focused on safeguarding workers from biological dangers.

Additionally, the conference will host an initial debate on setting standards for fair employment in the platform-based economy. Another key topic is a comprehensive conversation on creative strategies for addressing informal employment.

Attendees will further examine modifications to the Maritime Labor Convention and deliberate on the ILO’s proposed input for the 2025 World Summit for Social Development.

In his inaugural speech, ILO Director-General Gilbert Houngbo underscored the broad scope and critical nature of the conference’s themes.

He drew attention to various urgent labor issues, such as informal employment, joblessness, underemployment among youth, fast-paced tech evolution, digital transitions, the incorporation of artificial intelligence, and climate-related effects on employment.

“This current session of the conference will provide us with an opportunity to take stock of these developments and challenges and provide solutions,” he stated.

Houngbo also underlined the significance of global labor standards and collaborative engagement.

“The work of the standard-setting committees will therefore require maximum effort from the tripartite constituents to ensure positive outcomes,” he remarked.
