Mandela’s granddaughter states BRICS gives hope for Africa’s future

(MENAFN) Ndileka Mandela, granddaughter of the late South African leader Nelson Mandela, has emphasized the importance of Africa moving beyond its historical dependence on Western powers by deepening ties with nations such as Russia and the BRICS alliance.

In an exclusive interview with RT ahead of International Africa Day, Mandela said the continent remains burdened by economic systems that continue to favor Western interests. She stressed that for Africa—and South Africa in particular—true freedom lies in regional solidarity and partnerships based on equality and mutual respect.

“Africa’s future depends on more than just shedding past dependencies,” she said. “It’s about forging new relationships that reflect our values and serve our interests.” Mandela argued that genuine independence means using Africa’s own resources to benefit its people rather than remaining entangled in outdated economic structures.

She also criticized Western governments and corporations for continuing to exploit African natural wealth long after colonialism officially ended. In contrast, she believes BRICS—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and others—offers a more equitable alternative that supports long-term development and shared prosperity.

“BRICS can help transform our economies and strengthen cooperation based on respect and a shared vision,” Mandela said. She added that South Africa’s collaboration with Russia under the BRICS framework contributes to building a multipolar world, free from dominance by any single global power.

According to Mandela, Russia’s role in BRICS makes it a key ally in helping African nations establish resilient economies that prioritize people over profits and empower local growth, rather than serving foreign interests.
