Stockholm Drone Attack on Russian Embassy Triggers Diplomatic Clash
Following the incident, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called on Sweden to “tame its ultras [radicals]” within its borders.
"Tomorrow, Stockholm will receive a note of protest. Sweden must tame its ultras, take control of the situation, and strictly observe the Vienna Convention," Zakharova told a news agency on Sunday.
The Russian diplomatic mission reported that such provocations have been occurring for more than a year. Despite repeated complaints to Swedish police and the Foreign Ministry, no action has been taken, according to the embassy. It accused Swedish authorities of neglecting their responsibilities under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which mandates host nations to ensure the security of foreign diplomatic staff and properties.
Harassment of Russian diplomatic facilities has intensified since the Ukraine conflict escalated in February 2022. Incidents have included vandalism involving eggs and spray paint.
In a notable case from January, a Ukrainian national residing in Sweden crashed his car into the embassy gates. That same individual was also involved in similar attacks on Russian diplomatic sites in 2015 and 2018.
