Rubio emphasizes US opposing stance on ‘endless negotiations’ on Ukraine

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has emphasized that Washington does not support prolonged peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine without tangible outcomes. Speaking on CBS News’ Face the Nation, Rubio acknowledged that while patience is needed to seek a peaceful resolution to the war, the US expects visible progress.

His comments follow the first direct talks between Russia and Ukraine in three years, held in Istanbul. The two sides agreed on a major prisoner exchange involving 1,000 individuals from each side and planned to present detailed ceasefire proposals in the next phase of negotiations.

“We’re trying to end a devastating war, so some patience is warranted,” Rubio said. “But we can’t afford endless dialogue. We need to see forward movement and results.”

Rubio stated that the US would assess the proposed ceasefire terms and labeled realistic offers as signs of progress. He also confirmed the US is prepared to escalate sanctions against Russia if talks fail, including backing a bill to impose 500% tariffs on imports from nations buying Russian energy.

According to the White House, Rubio also spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, echoing President Donald Trump’s call for an immediate ceasefire.

Moscow, however, insists that any truce must address what it sees as the root causes of the conflict, such as Ukraine’s NATO ambitions. President Vladimir Putin has argued that a lasting peace requires Ukraine to halt mobilization, stop receiving foreign weapons, and withdraw from territories claimed by Russia. He also warned that a temporary ceasefire could allow Kiev to rebuild its military capabilities.
